Black and white

Er komen steeds meer zwarte meubels in ons huis, aangevuld met zwarte en witte accessoires. Bijzonder want eerder was ik nooit zo van zwart & wit voor in huis. Mijn smaak is de afgelopen jaren veranderd. Eenvoudig, strak, industrieel & stoer zijn de woorden die goed passen bij de dingen die ik mooi vind en qua kleuren gaat mijn voorkeur uit naar (verschillende tinten) zwart, grijs en wit. Dit betekent niet dat ons hele huis zo te omschrijven is maar dat hoeft ook niet. Een fijne, neutrale basis werkt goed met de explosie van kleur die speelgoed en 'kinderkunst' met zich meebrengen en blijkbaar passen accessoires in zwart en wit daar goed bij.

More and more black furniture can be found in our house, complemented with black and white accessories. This is quite special because previously I didn't really like black & white in my house. My taste has changed the past few years. Simple, austere, industrial & rough are the words which fit items I like. Different shades of black, grey and white are my favourite colours. This doesn't mean that you could describe our entire house with these words but that doesn't matter. The basic elements in the house are nice and neutral and work well with the colour explosion of toys and my daughter's 'art' and apparently accessories in black and white go well with that.

Van de zomer kochten we niet alleen een zwarte, leren bank maar ook drie zwarte Eames stoelen voor bij de eettafel.
Last summer we did not only buy a black, leather sofa but also three black Eames chairs for our dining table.

Dit zwarte steentje, haast hartvormig, vonden we in het bos achter ons huis.
We found this black stone, almost heart shaped, in the woods behind our house.

Een kraamkadootje dat favoriet is van zowel baby B. als van ons zijn deze Wee Gallery art cards. Deze (dubbelzijdige) kaarten zijn speciaal ontworpen voor baby's omdat ze in het begin vooral contrast zien. Ik vind de tekeningen erg leuk en denk dat de kaarten ook leuk zijn om in te lijsten en op te hangen op een kinderslaapkamer.

One of the gifts we received when B. was born and a favourite of all of us are these Wee Gallery art cards. The (two-sided) cards are especially designed for babies because newborns primarily see contrast. I like the drawings a lot and I think that the cards are suitable to be framed and put up in a child's bedroom.

I ordered this china light from Stoerinstyle. I fell for it because of the simplicity of both the shape and the print. I like it even better with a tealight in it...

magazine junkie #4

Ik ben verliefd... Al eerder schreef ik over een nieuw Brits tijdschrift dat ik heb 'ontdekt'. Het blad, waarvan in september het eerste nummer uitkwam, heet 'The Simple Things' en heeft als ondertitel 'celebrating the things that matter most'. De inhoud is verdeeld in drie delen, dawn, day & dusk (dageraad, overdag & schemering, mmm dat klinkt toch minder in het Nederlands...) en in elk deel staan artikelen en rubrieken die passen bij dat deel van de dag. Zo staat in het eerste nummer bijvoorbeeld een artikel over appels plukken - aangevuld met heerlijke appelrecepten, een reportage over een bijzonder huis in Berlijn en een mooi verhaal over oude, handgeschilderde reclames op gebouwen. In het tweede nummer onder andere een reportage over Amsterdam (!), lekkere recepten en een item over een bijzondere verzameling (oude) sjaals. Uiteraard vind je ook shopping tips, recensies van boeken etc.

Waarom ik dit blad zo leuk vind weet ik eigenlijk niet... Het is de 'sfeer' ervan denk ik. Het tijdschrift heeft een fijne, eenvoudige lay-out, er staan veel mooie foto's in (en opvallend weinig advertenties!) en ik vind de insteek dat het blad gaat over the simple things in life ook wel aardig. Een goede tegenhanger voor de wat meer glossy en 'hippere' bladen die ik doorgaans lees. Overigens geeft de website een aardig beeld van de sfeer van het blad. Ik denk dat ik maar een abonnement ga nemen!

I'm in love... Earlier I wrote about a new British magazine that I 'discovered'. The magazine, of which the first issue was published in September, is called 'The Simple Things' and its sub-heading is 'celebrating the things that matter most'. The magzine's content is divided into three parts, dawn, day & dusk, and each part contains articles and columns which fit that particular part of the day. In the first issue there's an article about apple picking (with delicious apple recipes!), a report about a special house in Berlin and an interesting feature about old, hand-painted advertising signs on buildings. In the second issue amongst others a feature about Amsterdam, lovely recipes and an article about a special collection of (old) scarves. Of course each issue contains shopping tips, book reviews etc. as well.  

I don't really know why I like this magazine so much... It has something to do with the feeling I get while reading, I think. The magazine has a beautiful, simple lay-out, there are many great pictures in it (and strikingly few advertisements!) and I like the fact that the magzine deals with the simple things in life. It's a good counterpart for the more glossy and 'trendy' magazines I usually read. The Simple Things' website represents the 'ambience' of the magazine rather well. I think I am going to subscribe! 

Movember

OK, ik ben geen man en heb ook geen snor ;) Toch aandacht voor de snor en wel vanwege Movember. Wereldwijd laten mannen in de maand november hun snor staan om aandacht te vragen voor gezondheidsproblemen van mannen. Movember ontstond in 2003 in Australië en ondertussen worden er in meer dan twintig landen wereldwijd officiële inzamelingsacties georganiseerd. In Nederland komen alle donaties ten goede aan het prostaatkankeronderzoek van het Nederlands Kanker Instituut – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Ziekenhuis (NKI-AVL).
Via Imke (van de blog lovejohnny) die dit jaar voor het eerst Creasint organiseert (waarover later meer) kwam ik in contact met Heleen Reijns van Studio vanDD. Zij verkoopt 'snor rietjes' waarvan de opbrengst ook naar Movember gaat. De rietjes zijn erg leuk voor feestjes of gewoon voor de heb. Dus wil je ook een steentje bijdragen koop dan ook een setje snorretjes...! OK, I am not a man and I don't have a moustache either ;) Nevertheless I want to pay attention to the moustache and this is because of Movember. In November men around the world grow a moustache to ask attention for men's health issues. In 2003 Movember began in Australia and since then more than twenty countries worldwide have joined in and organise official money raising activities. In The Netherlands all the money raised will be donated to prostate cancer research of the 'Nederlands Kanker Instituut - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Ziekenhuis' (NKI-AVL).
Via Imke (of lovejohnny), who organises 'Creasint' (about which I will write more later), I got in touch with Heleen Reijns of 'Studio vanDD'. She sells 'moustache straws', very nice for parties or just fun to have. The proceeds of these cute moustaches will go to Movember. Dudok

Arnhem is een fijne stad om te winkelen. Je hebt er niet alleen filialen van verschillende winkelketens maar ook veel kleine, bijzondere winkeltjes - een goede combinatie! Favoriet lunchadres is Dudok. Dudok Arnhem is gevestigd in een mooi oud pand, waarin voorheen de Van Ranzows Bank zat (later overgenomen door verschillende andere banken). Het gebouw is in 1920 ontworpen door architect J.P. Stok Wzn en is een rijksmonument. Ik hou van de sobere, enigzins industriële 'look' die het restaurant heeft.

Arnhem is a great place to go shopping. There are branches of all kinds of department stores but also many small, one-of-a-kind shops - a good combination! My favourite place to have lunch is Dudok. Dudok Arnhem is situated in a beautiful old building which previously housed the Van Ranzows Bank (later the Van Ranzows Bank was taken over by different other banks). Architect J.P. Stok Wzn designed the building in 1920 and it is a monument now. I love the sober, somewhat industrial 'look' the restaurant has.

This week...

I was very happy when my new necklace arrived, which I ordered from Sonja (bySoos).

I fell in love with a beautiful, old VW pick-up which was part of the decoration in our local garden center.

we enjoyed the autumn sun in between showers!
